This optical dissolved oxygen meter can be used in wastewater treatment plants to measure and regulate oxygen in activated sludge tanks in order to achieve high efficiency in the biodegradation process.
A optical dissolved oxygen meter measures the amount of oxygen dissolved within an aqueous solution. Oxygen is dissolved in water by surrounding air, air movement and photosynthesis. Through respiration and decomposition, dissolved oxygen is consumed in water and is replenished mainly by air and photosynthesis. The amount of oxygen in the water depends mainly on the temperature. The oxygen concentration of warm water is lower than that of cold water. However, high dissolved oxygen levels can be harmful to plants and animals.
Proper dissolved oxygen is essential for good water quality, and all life forms require oxygen. The natural stream water purification process requires the proper level of oxygen to supply aerobic life forms. If the oxygen content in the water is below 5.0mg/L, aquatic life will have difficulty surviving, the lower the concentration the more difficult it will be. Oxygen levels below 1-2mg/L for several hours will result in mass mortality of aquatic organisms.
